Understanding Restricted Items Export

Items that cannot be exported freely are included on the Restricted list in the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) / International Trade Classification (HS) Schedule 2. Learn about the requirements and processes for legally exporting these items from India.

What are Restricted Export Items?

According to the 2018 edition of the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), certain items are designated as "Restricted" for export. These items require special authorization from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) before they can be exported from India.

Items on the Restricted export list may be controlled for various reasons, including but not limited to:

  • National security concerns
  • Conservation of natural resources
  • Environmental protection
  • Protection of endangered species
  • International agreements and obligations
