What is IEC?
IEC (Importer Exporter Code) is a 10-digit code issued by DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade), Department of Commerce, Government of India to Indian Companies. This code is mandatory for export from India or Import to India. No person or entity shall make any Import or Export without IEC.
IEC is issued against the PAN of a company or firm or proprietorship. One PAN can have only one IEC. IEC is a lifelong code and doesn't require any renewal.
IEC is required by the exporter at the time of exports and also by the importer while importing. IEC is quoted on all the import and export documents like shipping bills, bills of entry, etc.

Who can apply for IEC?
Individuals
Any individual with a valid PAN card can apply for IEC for personal business purposes.
Companies & Firms
Private/Public Limited Companies, LLPs, Partnership Firms, and Proprietorship concerns.
Other Entities
Trusts, Societies, NGOs, and other legal entities with valid PAN registration.
Important: IEC is issued against the PAN of the applicant. One PAN can have only one IEC.
Modification & Management of IEC
Modification in IEC
If there is any change in the details of the IEC holder like address, phone number, email ID, bank details, etc., the same needs to be updated in the IEC. The modification can be done online through the DGFT website.

Annual Compliance
As per the recent notification by DGFT, all IEC holders are required to update their IEC details online every year during April-June period.
If the IEC holder fails to update the IEC details during April-June period, the IEC will be deactivated. The deactivated IEC can be reactivated by updating the IEC details and paying a fee of Rs. 200/-.
Cancellation of IEC
If the IEC holder wants to surrender the IEC, they can apply for cancellation of IEC through the DGFT website.
