About GST Registration

What is GST Registration?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) registration is the process by which businesses register under the GST law to collect tax on behalf of the government and to avail input tax credit on their purchases. It's a mandatory requirement for businesses whose turnover exceeds the threshold limit.

Upon registration, businesses receive a unique 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) which serves as their identity for all GST-related activities.

Eligibility for GST Registration

GST registration is mandatory for:

  • Businesses with an annual turnover exceeding ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for special category states)
  • Inter-state suppliers of goods (regardless of turnover)
  • Casual taxable persons or non-resident taxable persons
  • Agents of a supplier and input service distributors
  • E-commerce operators and suppliers through e-commerce
  • Persons required to pay tax under reverse charge mechanism

Consequences of Not Obtaining GST Registration

Failing to register for GST when required by law can lead to several serious consequences:

  • Penalty of 10% of the tax due or ₹10,000, whichever is higher
  • Inability to collect tax from customers
  • No input tax credit on purchases
  • Difficulty in doing business with GST-registered entities
  • Legal proceedings and potential business disruption
  • Retrospective tax liability from the date registration was required
  • Negative impact on business reputation and credibility
