This park has played a crucial role in promoting food processing in the North East region, creating employment opportunities and providing market linkages for local farmers.
Reduction in post-harvest losses from 18% to 10%
Increased value addition from 20% to 30%
15-20% increase in farmers' income
Increase in processing level from 10% to 20%
Creation of 250,000+ jobs across the country
Significant increase in food product exports
A Mega Food Park is a hub-and-spoke model that provides modern infrastructure facilities for food processing along the value chain from farm to market with strong forward and backward linkages. It typically consists of a Central Processing Centre (CPC) and several Primary Processing Centers (PPCs) strategically located near the farms.
The scheme is implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) which can be formed by private companies, public sector companies, joint ventures, NGOs, cooperatives, and self-help groups. The SPV should have a minimum equity of ₹50 crores and a net worth of at least ₹25 crores.
The scheme provides financial assistance in the form of grant-in-aid at 50% of the eligible project cost in general areas and 75% in difficult and hilly areas (North East Region including Sikkim, J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand) subject to a maximum of ₹50 crores per project.
A minimum of 50 acres of contiguous land is required for the Central Processing Centre (CPC). The land should be owned or leased by the SPV. In case of lease, the lease period should be at least 75 years.
The grant-in-aid is released in three installments: 35% as first installment after approval and fulfillment of initial conditions, 40% as second installment after utilization of 70% of first installment, and 25% as third installment after utilization of 70% of second installment.
The project should be completed within 30 months from the date of approval. This includes land acquisition within 6 months of approval and financial closure within 6 months of land acquisition.
No, the cost of land is not eligible for grant assistance under the scheme. The SPV has to arrange for the land from its own resources.
As of now, 42 Mega Food Parks have been approved across the country, out of which several are already operational and the rest are in various stages of implementation.
