Ensuring safe and wholesome food for all Indians through science-based standards and regulations.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. It was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India.
FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. It establishes science-based standards for articles of food and regulates their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.
The FSSAI license or registration is mandatory for all food business operators in India, including manufacturers, traders, restaurants, and e-commerce entities involved in the food business.

Central FSSAI license is mandatory for large food businesses operating across multiple states or engaged in food import/export.
State FSSAI license is required for medium-sized food businesses operating within a single state.
FSSAI returns are mandatory annual filings for all licensed food business operators to maintain compliance.
